Société des Vins Mousseux is a family company founded in Bordeaux in the early 20th Century. It has its own distribution network and is known throughout the South-west. In 1996, it was bought by Grands Vins de Gironde, which was looking to add sparkling wines to its wine range. It left its cellars in Caudéran, in the Bordeaux suburbs, and set up on the group’s premises in Saint-Loubès in 1998. SVM specialises in making sparkling wines in closed vats. The current winery offers 2500 hl of storage and fermentation. All the vats have the equipment required for making sparkling wine and are fitted with automatic temperature control systems. The wines used as a base come from grape varieties selected for their ability to become sparkling wines. SVM has its own bottling and labelling line. The sparkling wine sector has been growing rapidly since the late 1990s. 98% of SVM wines are exported, half to the West Indies and the other half mainly to Asia and the United States, distributed by GVG. The remaining 2% goes to the French restaurant trade.
