Château Guiraud Cheval Blanc is in the Côtes de Bourg appellation, north of the Gironde, in the commune of Saint-Ciers-de-Canesse. Situated on a hillside, it offers a superb view of the surrounding area, all the way to the Médoc, on the other side of the estuary. The château has belonged to the Deliaune family since 1852, with the estate being handed down from father to son, who have often exercised a dual activity outside the Bordeaux region. Laurent Deliaune took over the estate in 1999 as a winegrower, while his father looks after the business side. Grands Vins de Gironde, and before that Maison de Luze, has been an exclusive partner to the château since 1962.

The soils in the Côtes de Bourg appellation are very changing, consisting of valleys and hillsides. On the 18 ha of the Château Guiraud Cheval Blanc estate, half are on clay-and-limestone and the rest is on sandy clay-and-limestone. The vines are 20 years old on average and consist of 75% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Malbec and Cabernet Franc, planted at a density of 5000 vines per hectare. The grapes are machine-harvested, lot by lot. Vinification is adapted to the grapes; some vats go through a cold pre-fermentation maceration. Alcoholic fermentation takes place at a temperature below 30°C. The wine is then matured in stainless steel or lined concrete vats.

This well-rounded, smooth, fruity wine should be enjoyed fairly young. Serve at room temperature with grilled or roasted red meats, charcuterie and reasonably strongly-flavoured cheeses.
