Grands Vins de Gironde has worked with the Bardet family for many years. They are the owners of SCEA Vignobles Bardet, of which Château Pontet-Fumet is a part. The family has lived in Vignonet, south of Saint-Emilion, since the 18th century, where it owned a house on the banks of the Dordogne and a few vines on the best gravel soils in the village. Roger Bardet’s ancestors made their living from inland waterway transport, selling wine and cereals. With the arrival of the railways, they were forced to give up their waterway transport activity. In 1962, Roger Bardet, a broker,  bought a few parcels of vines and founded Château Pontet-Fumet, giving it the names of the hamlets from which his grandparents originated. His son, Philippe, has now taken over the family estate as a winegrower. As he says himself, he is the first “farmer” in the family after a long line of businessmen.

This wine is a dense, garnet colour and has a powerful, complex nose revealing very ripe dark and red berry aromas and an elegant oakiness. The full, sappy structure is supported by smooth, firm tannins. The lovely volume is enhanced by liquorice and jammy red berry flavours. The long finish reinforces the impression of firmness, elegance and balance, holding out the promise of a good future.
Serve at room temperature with grilled or roasted red meats, game birds or animals and strong cheeses.

The vineyards are planted on 13 ha of very gravelly soils. They consist of 68% Merlot Noir, 26% Cabernet Franc and 6% Cabernet Sauvignon and produce a concentrated, hearty wine. The vineyards are traditionally run and Philippe Bardet has opted for an “enlightened” form of agriculture that aims to monitor the vines day by day and treat them in a curative manner rather than spraying automatically. Following traditional vinification in vats, all the wine is matured in the barrel for a period determined by tastings.
