Grands Vins de Gironde has worked with Château du Ragon since 1994, and sells its wine, keeping up ties that had existed for many years with De Rivoyre and Diprovin. The parents of the current owner were from a family that had been closely involved in the world of winegrowing for many generations and in 1957 they bought Château du Ragon. Situated on the borders of the Entre-Deux-Mers region, the estate only had 24 ha of land, including 6 ha of fallow vines. They restored the estate and bought land. When Jean-Luc Sorges took over as manager in 1975, the estate covered only 30 ha. The cellars has grown to match the size of the estate: it originally produced 300 hl, but has risen to 26,000 hl in fifty years.
Although the Bordeaux red, with its fruity aromas and intense colour is smooth and easy-drinking, it is due to the rigour, experience and support of well-known oenologists that Château du Ragon has been able to get the best out of certain rather difficult vintages. A lovely Bordeaux colour with youthful tints, the wine releases blackcurrant and red berry aromas. Crisp on the palate, with good volume and a delightful blackcurrant and bilberry finish. An ideal companion to red meat, poultry and mild cheeses. Château du Ragon Bordeaux white is a golden yellow colour with green tints. Its powerful, complex nose reveals peach, grapefruit, tropical fruit and white blossom aromas. Mellow and well-balanced, it asserts its roundness and freshness on the palate, keeping its fruity, mandarin and citrus fruit flavours for a long time. Serve chilled as an aperitif or with fish and seafood.

The Château has clay-and-limestone soils on several parcels. In order to produce Bordeaux reds and whites, these are planted with 38% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc, 39% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Sauvignon and 2% Semillon. The parcels are deliberately grassed along the rows to avoid soil erosion and limit the vigour of the vine. They are run by an “enlightened” form of agriculture that aims to monitor the vines day by day and treat them in a curative manner rather than preventive.
